Hey,

I decided to get back into naval gaming and got GQ 3.3. Everything makes sense except the torpedo arc template, particularly the port and starboard aspect. I don't see what launching them on the port side or the starboard side should make a difference in terms of the arcs. Maybe I am missing something here!

No offense to the writers the rules, but their explanation and steps on how to use it is pretty straight foreword up to the point of which arch to use. Then there is a missing stop or something.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Chris

Chris,

What I understand is that by specifying red or green you advising which side of the ship you are firing from... plus the angle. Of course, I thought that was clear from where you point the starting point at... but once ship moves away maybe you might forget?!

And if I'm wrong, glad to hear the real story!

William,

Thanks for the reply. I guess that makes sense. I thought that same thing. that it would be obvious by were you placed the marker at the start.

That's pretty much the essence of it. The colors (red/right/starboard side,green/left/port side) refer to the side that the torpedoes are launched from. The specific arcs (R1-R5, G1-G5) are the arcs for launching torpedoes.

The procedure for launching torpedoes is that you place the gauge against the appropriate side of the launching ship and then note which arc you're firing the torpedoes down. For example: I'm firing 12 torpedoes (off 3 mounts) from the port/left side of my DD. First, I place a piece of tape (or a postit tab) next to the firing DDs port/left side (this is so you'll know where the torpedoes were launched from after the DD continues on). Second, I place the gauge next to the DD and decide which specific arcs I what the torpedoes fire down (remember, torpedoes are launched by mount, so in this case, I can have up to 3 different arcs). Since I'm firing off the port/left side, I would use the green (G1-G5) arcs. Let's say I decide to send 4 torpedoes down G2, 4 down G3, and the last 4 down G4; I'd note this on a separate log as '4-G2, 4-G3, 4-G4. Then, in later turns, I'd sheck to see if any ships cross the arcs I chose and, if any ships have crossed, proceed to roll for any hits.

Wow, I didn't realize you could use the entire arc (I missed the "sweeping the tape" phrase). I always just plotted a line down the approximate center of the selected arc. Still won't be easy to get torpedo hits, but I was making it unnecessarily hard for everyone involved. Glad I checked in.

You might find this easier. I've attached a read me (word file), another word doxc. and a pdf. file. The word (read me file) reminds you that you'll need Avery #5422 peel off sticker package. The word doxc file will print on the peel off stickers that you place beside your ship firing torpedoes (and then cover with a post it). The sticker is a simple fill in the blanks, check the box that details all the information you need to record when you fire torpedoes including; game turn, # of torps, spread (angle), long range (or not) & depth setting. There are 842 stickers in the package and if you ever need to purchase them again you are truly a torpedo master. The pdf. is a color copy of the torpedo template that you can blow up or shrink down as you need to for the scale of your ships.

Actually, I received them from Robert Bishop, so credit where credit is due. I really love these rules and anything I can do to help others receive the same enjoyment is something I'm more than willing to help with.

These are very useful, thanks for sharing.
