Hi all, just purchased GQ3 and being totally thick I need some help please. Re the ships log, on the bottom where the Hull boxes are, how do they work? I get the first one is the speed, but what about the rest of the boxes?

When you work out the hits and consult the Gunfire Damage chart, yes throw the die and get a result, how do I convert that in to damage points to take off the hull boxes? It's probably quite simple, but at the moment it's not for me!! Help please?

The Ship Logs are described on pages xii-xiii.  Under the first bullet on page xiii, it states "The lower row in the Log contains the ship’s Hull Boxes, which simulate her seaworthiness. Hull damage is cumulative, with each Hull Box marked off from left to right representing a successive reduction in buoyancy and maximum speed. When all her Hull Boxes are marked off, a ship sinks. A light yellow shaded Box denotes the reduction in maximum speed resulting from an Engineering hit, described in rule Section 1.7.2, and “UE” is listed when a ship has Unit Engineering."

Hull Damage is explained on page 1-13 under 1.7.2 Damage Descriptions: "Damage to the target’s hull results in flooding and reduction in maximum speed. Unlike other types, Hull damage is cumulative with boxes marked off from left to right on her Ship Log for each successive hit. She sinks when all of her Hull boxes are marked off. Half Hull hits are recorded, but have no effect until a full box is flooded."

The other item that's germane is under 1.6.2 Non - Penetration: "Damage results requiring penetration of armor are indicated on the GUNFIRE DAMAGE and CRITICAL HIT tables by dark borders. When the target’s armor classification exceeds the firing battery’s penetration, the armor is not penetrated. Modify damage results for non-penetrating hits as follows: Hull hits are halved. A ship retains the flotation and speed capacity in a Hull Box until both halves are lost. Record a ½ Hull Box hit as a diagonal line through the Hull Box on the target’s Ship Log."

All page and paragraph references are to the GQ3.3 book.

thanks Dave, yes I read this. Where I think I'm getting confused is, in other rules I've used a number in a hull box is classed as 'points', and where damage is caused said damage = so many points and they are deducted from the hull box, in this case is it that a COMPLETE box is crossed off (or half) at any one time?

Here's a scenario; two DD's have at it, one scores 2 actual hits after modifiers, I throw a 3 and 9 on the gunfire damage chart, 3 = Torpedo mount, 9 = Bulkhead.

I refer to Damage description, TT disables torpedo mounts and they are crossed off on the ships log

9 = Bulkhead, do I then cross off one complete bulkhead box starting from left to right?

(I think I see this! lol)

So one final question, what IS the significance of the numbers in the bulkhead box's?

Again Dave, I appreciate the help.

The boxes at the bottom of the ship logs are Hull Boxes, not Bulkhead Boxes. The number in the left-most un-completely-crossed-off Hull Box is the ship's maximum speed in knots. This will translate into how far across the table the ship can move depending upon the scale being used (the default for 1/2400 scale ships is 1 knot = 1cm). Hull Boxes are only marked off completely (i.e. crossed off or an 'X'), or marked off 1/2 (i.e. a slash). If it is to be only 1/2 a Hull Box, it will say so (e.g. from certain Fires) or if it's a non-penetrating hit like I mentioned before. The effects of a Bulkhead hit are described under 1.7.2 Damage Descriptions: "Breaches a main bulkhead, causing extensive flooding of nearby compartments. Mark off one [COMPLETE] Hull box immediately and circle “Bulkhead” in the upper row of the target’s Ship Log. Mark off an additional [COMPLETE] Hull box if a D12 die roll does not contain the flooding in the Damage Control Phase of the next Game Turn. One [COMPLETE] Hull box floods each succeeding Damage Control Phase until contained or the vessel sinks." I added the "[COMPLETE]"s. You circle "Bulkhead" at the top to remind you to 1) to try fix it in the Damage Control Phase, and 2) to take the extra damage if you don't fix it. If you do fix it, erase the circle. Dave

"So one final question, what IS the significance of the numbers in the bulkhead box's?"

First, the correct term is Hull Boxes (not Bulkhead Boxes). The numbers are the top speed of the ship. So as Hull Boxes are marked off, the ship's top speed is progressively reduced. For example: When Hood loses 1 Hull Box, her top speed drops from 29 knots to 26 knots (the next unmarked Hull Box); upon losing 2 Hull Boxes, her top speed would drop to 23 knots).
