Why is the Atlanta-class CL not have the Main Btty listed as a 5"AA?

Considering that is what these ships were for?

I do see that it has a rather high AA value, though.

They are armed with the 5"L38, the same 5" as destroyers have; also the secondaries for the new BBs, Clevelands and Baltimores. The 5"AA represents the 5"L25 which were the secondaries for the prewar 8" cruisers (except Wichita) and the Brooklyns (except for the last two).

Yes, I am aware of the different guns.

The Atlanta-class has basically the same turrets that were on the Essex-class carriers, and on the Gearing-class DD and Allen M. Sumner-class DDs.

The 5"/25s were on the Treaty Cruisers, but they were not limited to AA work, they were simply the secondary battery, and they had a much shorter range and velocity than the 5"/38s of the DDs (which were also used as AA weapons - or could be).

It just seems rather strange that a Light Cruiser intended as an AA platform would not have the mains counted as AA weapons. Some of them had little opportunity to be used in that fashion, but showed to be exceptional in the role when put to it.

The 5"AA gun listed on the CRT is the 5"/25 that was common during the inter-war.  The 5" listed on the CRT is the 5"/38 that is the standard dual purpose weapon.  The AA values for the Atlanta class includes the main battery 5"/38s.  In fact, the AA values for ALL the ships in GQ3.3 include the main batteries when those batteries are recognized as dual purpose weapons.

OK.... It took me a minute to get that this is just a distinction to differentiate the different types of guns, and not necessarily their uses.

Like the Kriegsmarine having the 5.9"D and the 5.9", or the IJN having the two different 5" guns (again, a 5" and a 5"AA, representing the dual-purpose Type 89 12.7cm gun, being different from the 12.7cm Type 3, Models A - D that were typical of Destroyers in the Special Class DDs of the IJN).

I am more used to playing what I see called in these forums the "Bolts and Rivet counter" type of games from when I was younger (Like GDW's Battlewagon, which we used for WWI and Pre-Dreadnoughts during the 1980s, or the old Wooden Ships and Iron Men from Avalon hill).

This makes sense now.

It does make me wonder about the 5"/50s being differentiated from the 5"/38s that were common on most DDs. Many of the older DDs still have the 5"/50s.

But I suppose that is a negligible complaint.
