A new product from Russia’s KBP Instrument Design Bureau (Stand K3/K5) is displayed for the first time at an international defence exhibition. The Shmel-M PDM-A is a rocket-propelled flamethrower for infantry use derived from earlier versions but providing greater range and accuracy.Despite increasing sophistication in infantry missile systems, rockets remain a potent weapon that is often capable of defeating armoured vehicles and have even shot down aircraft. Sweden, Germany and Russia have a long tradition in producing infantry rockets and the new Shmel-M promises to retain Russia’s position as a major supplier. Lighter than earlier models, it features increased range and lethality and is undergoing firing trials with the Russian army.Now entering series production, the 90mm Shmel-M has a maximum range of 1,700m and its thermobaric warhead is equivalent to 5-6kg of TNT, making it effective against bunkers and other armoured targets. The improved accuracy and reduced fragmentation area allow the rocket to be used for point engagements, including those in urban environments.The advanced design of the Shmel-M and its improved accuracy should halve the number of rounds needed to defeat a standard target at ranges of more than 300m and it is seen to provide a significant boost in the value of unguided close-in combat weapons. Its versatility and simplicity of operation are expected to make the Shmel-M a preferred weapon for various combat units including special forces. Its designers claim it will set new standards for anti-tank grenade launchers and other rockets used by the infantry.
