Hello,I dont know what are your experience, but I found small mortar like the WWII British 2'' motar a bit useless. I feel that they lack punch and range to be really usefull. I know that the 2'' mortar was suppose to be used also to lay smoke barrage for a squad. I know that some Platoon commander often group all of their small motar in one group. I have not tried this yet.Is their something I am missing ?

Well, even the German LeGrW '36 is pretty lame. The range.....sucks.The punch.....may cause some guys to to be pinned, but good for laying down smoke at close encounters. But even the German army grew disdain for their 50mm infantry mortars.

As noticed, the small (I prefer light) mortars do lack punch and I agree. I don't think I agree to them being useless, though. As I have figured out while changing over the infantry to squad level, killing isn't everything. I am equating killing to punch. The light mortars are actually used for harassment; slow down an attack or get the defenders heads down for an attack. Light mortars can cause pins and supressions which can really break up an attack or fragment a defense and reduce casualties taken by the mortar supported attack or defense. Of course decent die rolling is esential too. ;) Also, even the light mortars have a small chance of taking out an armored vehicle with little to no top armor. And with the recent addition of the +5 vs. Softskin modifier added to the HE Modifiers to Kill table (in the new revision of the rules), the light mortars should be lighting up any hapless unarmored vehicles wandering in their area.

Bob outlined their use exactly. Pins and Suppressions are powerful weapons against infantry, gun crews, and even tanks. Mortars can delay an attack by a turn or two so heavy weapons can be brought up and extra small arms fire brought to bear. Defenders will keep their heads down so attackers can close across open terrain. Add in Morale, and you get a very good simulation of infantry combat.Cheers,Gregory
