According to AFV database and some other sources the Sherman tanks were equipped not only with general smoke rounds for the main gun but also had smoke mortars fixed in the turret roof. I've also found several notes on British tanks being equipped with 2" smoke mortars.Could anyone check/confirm this and maybe update the databook files?MZ

I am unaware of mortars being attached to top of the Sherman turret. I have several books on the M4 and none mention this, although I'm sure odd things such as this were done by individual crews. I also believe this was not done by the British either, at least not on their Shermans.

Just as an example - some quick links, all mentioning Sherman's 2" smoke mortars:http://www.wwiivehic...m4_sherman.htmlhttp://www.combatmis...dtanks/m4a1.asphttp://www.geocities...ricantanks.htmland something about Britshttp://www.geocities...itishtanks.htmlCanadianshttp://www.junobeach...-arm-can-ep.htmAnd I did found a lot more...MZ

I know the British were in favor of having the 2" smoke mortar on their tanks and probably refitted some to their Shermans.

Some compelling info here, Jon. I am sorry I haven't gotten to this yet as I have been excessively busy over the holidays with no let up in site until near the end of the year. I promise I will get this done though. From what I have seen I would probably add this but I wanted to check a couple of books I have that are specific to US and British tanks. I'll post back here when I finally can get to this.

Well, I was able to find this info in numerous books in my posession. The data was placed in an obscure area in each of the books, but that is no good excuse to not have found it. Anyway I have updated all of the Shermans for all countries but the Brits (since they already had them anyway). I also updated the Chaffee since it too had the M3 2" smoke mortar like the Sherman. I found nothing on the M3/M5 Stuarts or any other tank to make me change them as well. The Playtest file has been updated for the Mein Panzer ET and the future Mein Panzer Lite ET. Thanks for all the input. :woohoo:
