I was taking a look at the 3.3 version and I have identified a missing since the original released version, and right now i think i'm speaking late.

Can someone explain me why, even if there are bunkerage and replenishment data for BB, CV, AK, AO, etc... there aren`t fuel consumption values in the 8h campaign turn table for these ship classes?

Saying that is it's very rare for those ships expend all their fuel in a campaign game doesn't fit very well, since there are replineshment/bunklerage rules for them................

in other words, is it possible to expand "fuel per 8 hr campaign turn" table to include these ships?

Thank you.

The reason the table does not include ships larger than CAs is that these limitations would rarely come into play in an operational scenario given their large fuel capacity. In fact, it was common for the smaller ships to refuel from the larger ships. The biggest limitation on operations was not the capacity of the larger ships but rather their smaller escorts.

Even though this is kind of Thread Necromancy, I thought that some research I have done on this subject might be worthwhile.

In looking at Refueling Operations, they usually took place every Two days for Carrier Groups, including the carrier.

Things like the operations chart of the Ulithi Carrier Task Force in support of the landings at Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines show a refueling every two to three days:

And, looking at the cruising range of the ships given at the website Pacific War Online for the Iowa-class (the biggest, yet most Fuel-efficient of the big ships), it has a range of around 12,000 miles at 20kts (and 15,000 at 15kts). I have found other sources that suggest this is an optimistic range, such as the book Beans, Bullets, and Black Oil: Logistical Operations in WWII, suggest that the Iowa tended to have a range of closer to 9,000 miles at 20kts, and around 5,500 miles at speeds of ~25kts (The fuel usage was not linear).

And looking at the Map, they tended to make about 2,000 - 5,000 miles roughly every three days (indicating some pretty brisk speeds).

And when you look at the less fuel-efficient ships, like the South Dakotas, or North Carolinas, you have an even shorter range for the bigger ships.

The Carriers tend to suggest comparable ranges for the Essex-class Carriers, which would be those based at Ulithi in 1944. And, as has been pointed out elsewhere with the Carrier flight operations, they often had to make at least 25kts into the wind for flight operations, which took roughly 2 - 3 of every 8 hours, or roughly ¼ of the day operating at 25+kts.

So only in terms of a day Campaign would fuel be irrelevant. But then it would likely be so for all ships, unless this was a part of the campaign.

This seems to suggest that fuel was an issue even for the larger ships, if they are having to refuel every 3,000-ish miles.

Edit: In some further reading, it looks like not every ship was refueled every two to three days. It seems that roughly ⅓ were refueled at a time, including the Carriers/BBs, which would be refueled every 6 to 9 days.

This would seem to give the carriers a bit longer legs, but still something that would need to be considered in campaigns of longer than a day or two.

Sorry for digging this up from the grave, but I was looking at the in book bunkerage chart and fuel consumption and did some calculaton with some Royal Navy destroyers which are at the longer end in the range spectrum and it translates into about 1/3 of the range listed in wikipedia which makes me wonder why fuel is an issue for the navies that gave monstrous range to their ships (i.e. RN, USN and IJN) and if I should apply the chart to them if I am to work on a campaign. Or am I missing something?

And for the reply above I think the reason for ships to refuel every few days or so somehow linked to the fact that bunkerage is at the same time a ship's ballast, which if you run your ship dry your might get stability problems which the game did not account for (and I am quite happy we are not descending into this pit)
