Page 3-3 Night Surface Attacks. Contrary to what is stated, British submarines did not confine night surface attacks to the later war against Japan. Such attacks were documented as early as 11 April 1940 in northern waters and as well as sinking many merchantmen they damaged, among other targets, the Lützow and Prinz Eugen, and in the Mediterranean sank the Italian cruiser Armando Diaz in 1941 and the most successful Allied submarine, Upholder, sank the Italian troopships Oceania and Neptunia in this manner on the night of 18 September 1941.Page 3-4, section 3.5.1 SONAR detection arc. While sweeping, sonar would be used over a 180 degree arc, but once a target was being hunted after detection it woukd be used over the full 360 degree arc.
