I'm a little concerned that the rule covering odd guns (round up if single mounts, round down if triples) has a adverse effect on a significant number of WW1 vessels (that is adverse in game terms though not to the ships themselves). The ones I'm talking about are those with a main battery conprising of just 2 guns, mounted singly, one fore & one aft. Examples include the British Bristol CL, Good Hope CA & Goshawk DD, the German V1 TBD, the Austrian Kaiser Karl VI CA & Balaton DD, the Italian Roma B* & Libia CS and the Russian Bayan II CA & Gaidamak DD.With this layout, the rule means that these ships fire fore or aft with half their battery just as effectively as on the broadside with a full battery. What do other people think? Am I worrying about this too much or do we need a rule to stop this effect? My thoughts would be either shift up one row if only one gun is firing or use a D20 instead of a D12 for the odd gun (which could be done for all odd single-mounted guns, eg 1 D12 plus 1 D20 for 3 single mounted guns).Bill MacGillivray

My 2¢ ... a single gun can either hit or miss... two guns can hit once, twice or miss. The probabilities are such that you could just roll an even or odd die for any hit, where only one hit was possible, and take the single hit where two hits were possible. For three guns, much the same technique should work for the odd gun.Jim

Our gaming group has solved the problem of the 'odd gun out' by using the 24 sided die made by Chessex(?). We pick them up at our local hobby shop. Role 'em on the same gunnery tables that the D12s use.Rob

Well, yes & no.In the 3 minutes shooting represented by a game turn, a single gun could hit several times. And in the game, each pair of guns can get 3 hits at close range.

Bill,Not to be obtuse, but if you hit in the turn, you hit once ... if rapid fire or some other modifier comes into play, you could obviously get more hits, but in general, a single 10-12 inch gun gets one try per turn.Am I missing something unsaid?Jim

One of us is missing something. As I read the rules, for each dice rolled (whether it be for one or two guns) you can miss or hit once, twice or three times. Rapid fire only increases the probability of getting hits, not the number of hits obtained. So my understanding is that a pair of guns can get up to 3 hits in a turn, or 1.5 per gun.

Bill,Yes, close range or rapid fire makes it harder to adjudicate ... I am not sure i have a tidy answer for that, so I will spend some time thinking that through...My goal is to break it down to a simple number and either roll that number of dice or make it a percentage and roll for that...Jim

Chessex now makes 24 sided dice. Our answer is have you roll a D24 instead of a D12.
