Just one question before we play our next scenario this friday. In the core rules there is written that Recon troops, together with FO's and Company HQ's are legal forward observers. Now in the WW2 Data Book, the rules for offboard artillery are changed in that you roll on table 10.3 to see if the offboard artillery arrives or not. There are also modifiers to this roll: for example a British FO gets a -2 to the roll. Now my question: what is the modifier for recon troop? These are not listed. Only FO, HQ and non-FO calls are listed. It They cannot be non-FO because in the core rules they are treated as legal Fo's.
Hope you can help

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. Have been very busy with real-life work and commitments.
The answer to your question is that Recon units are considered FOs and as such gain the same modifiers as an FO.
As stated in Chapter 5, Advanced Game Mechanics, page 5.6, third column, RECONNAISSANCE Section, Artillery subsection:

"If using the Artillery Drop-In, Recon units may also function as detached forward observers."

This indicates that the Recon unit acts as an FO thus getting the FO bonuses for calling artillery. Recon units do not get any special bonuses themselves.

Hope this helps. :)
