I am gaming the eastern front and the year is 1941 and I am the Russian player. At the point of the German invasion I am grabbing at straws to slow down the German advance and me nor the Germans can figure out what the value of my Russian flame thrower is with an OV of -3. So what I wanted to do is take the -3 ov and subtract it from 10 and then allow the 7 that would be left be the value that I apply against the top of the German tanks. Am I right or wrong? Hard enought to hold on against the Germans in 1941, but the Germans want a second opinion.

Hi Andrew,

You are not right. :)

First off, the Soviet flamethrower has an HE OV of 7f (f for flame) so if it is fired at a tank it will start on the 7 chart. You need no to-hit roll and the attack is resolved vs. the top armor of the tank. So, if you were attackiing a Pzkpfw IIIG with a top armor of 2 then all you would have to do is roll a to-kill roll on the 5 chart which is the HE OV of 7 of the flamethrower vs. the Pzkpfw-IIIG top armor of 2 (7-2=5).

Check the Direct Fire Chapter page 7.5-7.6 bottom of the third column of page 7.5, Flamethrower Section as below:

.....Flamethrowers come in two flavors: vehicle mounted and portable (infantry borne). Both use the same template, which is divided into 9 sections. To resolve a flamethrower attack, you first need to determine the area the attack will cover. On the Equipment Table, under the “Other” column in the Offensive Value section, you’ll see something like “Flame:3”. The number after the word "Flame” is the maximum area on the template that will be affected by the attack.
.....Next, place the pointy end against the stand firing. Any stand within the sections “1” up through the “Flame” value will be affected. Any stand fully beneath the template is a Direct Hit, while those touched (but not fully) are Partial Hits.
.....No To-Hit is necessary, jump straight to the Kill Table to work out the flamethrower result. The attack is resolved
against the top Defensive Value of the target and all HE modifiers apply.
.....The Offensive Value of the attack will also be found on the Equipment Table under both the “HE OV” and “HE FP” columns
with a suffix of “f”. For example, the weapon may have an HE OV of “10f”. Use OV against vehicles, guns, and structures,
and FP against infantry.

Flamethrowers are very nasty if you can get close enough alive to use them.

Hope this helps. :)
