I have been looking at the Engagement Set-up Instructions, inside the back cover, for locations E & F (either side of Savo Island). These are used in Engagements D Truk Bombardment vs Allied Bombardment (rare) and E Rabaul Bombardment or Patrol vs Allied Patrol.
I am a bit surprised to see that the Japanese are heading SW, W or NW. In other words out of Iron Bottom Sound. This might make some sense for a Japanese patrol but seems strange for a Bombardment force.
If a Bombardment force has got into Iron Bottom Sound and is now heading out (west) it seems a bit late for an engagement to stop them bombarding Henderson Field.
Also if you look at the main battles in and around Iron Bottom Sound (Savo Island, Cape Esperance, Guadalcanal, Tassafaronga) the Japanese are heading SE or S.
