HI
What would be a good strategic game to complement GQ3. What would like to do is recreate ww2 from 1939 where I can move fleets and create convoys move them around and where there is a meeting of opposing forces use GQ3 as the operational / tactical to game the outcomes. This could then change the strategic land war. I would like to be able to move fleets, convoys and down to forces like force H. Any ideas?

I am currently using Conways to document all the ships and using a couple of websites to document their starting points. I have also found a couple of sites that identify quite a few convoys and list of ships which will let me replicate that aspects.

Regards

The 1940 Norway campaign has lots of possibilities, with troop and resupply convoys, air ops including carriers, subs, mining ops and coastal defenses. The ships needed aren't excessive.

Thanks for your reply, after a little bit of research I was wondering if the following games would give me the strategic aspect. World in Flames, World at war or Europe Engulfed with Asia Engulfed and then use GQ 3 for the campaign and fleet actions aspect, Any advice?

I've seen groups use the Avalanche Press operational games (Bomb Alley, SOPAC, Leyte Gulf) with GQ3.  And with considerable success.  Can't commnet on the games you mentioned as I've never played them.

I'm with Coastal, I think that the Avalanche Press games are perfect for this.

I'm unclear about if you are fighting out the land war also - in which case I'd shoot for a low-complexity theater game in which you ADD more complex naval gaming / resolutions.  But if you just want to play out naval warfare, then I'm a strong supporter of Avalanche, as you could also use their simple and quick combat game to game out those encounters that you don't have time for a full-blown GQ3.3 game for.

Far as a nice combination of both, I'd look at Against the Odds board games.  They seem to be keeping up with the latest in design trends and graphics, while still selling a relatively inexpensive product.  There's one about the Bismark Barrier but I can't remember the name of it.  However, it includes the entire theater, so aircraft, supply, landings, land unit combat, all of it.  You could then just game out such surface battles as appeal to you.  However in this case you'd essentially be playing out the board game while selectively choosing surface ship combats for table play.  Seems a nice balance.  I got the game for this express purpose but haven't yet had the time to play it out.

Good luck!
