Platoon distance for reccon vehicles is 6'' (is 3 x greater than normal). Standart distance of company is 12''. It is good for normal comapnies but in case of reccon companies is not enough. CoyCO of reccon company should have much bigger ranges, maybe also 3x greater than normal.

I make graphic presentation - it show that someting is wrong with coyCO range in case reccon units. Platoons havnt enough space and some platoons have follows others.

In case of support company where platoon distance is 12'' situation is much worse.

Is this question a generic rules question or does it pertain to a specific TO&E? The reason I ask is that, typically, Recon units have no Company CO; only a Battalion CO. As this is usually the case the rule on page 13.2, 1st column, 1st full paragraph, Independant Units section states:

"Some TO&E have units (e.g., Recon) that are immediately subordinate to the Bttn CO and have no Coy CO. These Units trace their Chain of Command directly back to the Bttn CO using his Command Distance."

This would make the command range 5x the TQ of the unit , which would be about 50+ inches.

Also, if the unit does have a Company CO the Recon unit within the company can be detached as an independent unit and operate with greater freedom. See page 5.6, 3rd column, 2nd paragraph, Artillery Spotting section:

"If using the Artillery Drop-In, Recon units may also function as detached forward observers."

With these rules in place, and with the multitude of playtesting and convention games we don't feel that any rules changes are necessary. Not all Recon units had the freedom to maneuver per the Nation directives. Recon units would recon and therefor push and per the National doctrine if they have a Company CO then the company would push forward. The platoon command distance for recon units is 3x the normal distance so they can cover triple the area. The Company CO will have a 24" diameter command distance. Two feet is a lot of area for 1/285th scale miniatures.

What happen if one vehicle in platoon is destroyed and  vehicles now are divided for two groups separated by range more than platoon distance - one of them is now out of command at beginning of activation?

If there is a designated command vehicle surviving then the group with the command vehicle is the one that still is in command.  The other is out of command and looses it bonus move at the beginning of the next activation.

If there is not a designated command vehicle then the player chooses which of the 2 groups is the "command group" and the other is out of command.

It's not perfect but unless you are utilizing the Command Drop-In, this works to keep the game rolling.

Yes, the unit would be out of command and when the unit is activated it would lose its bonus move action. However, it is simple to regain command distance. When activated, move a stand back into command distance using its standard action. This represents the control the CO has to maintain over his unit and provides a maneuver penalty when a unit is not in command. Even Recon companies have this limitation. Remember though that a recon platoon can be detached and free of this restriction to provide scouting and FO duties. While not explicitly spelled out in the rules, a unit can be detached from its parent unit and function independently. The Company CO command distance only applies to units within its company and if a unit is detached it is no longer under the Company CO's purview.
