DTMB, the Stats of the Involved Allied Ship Classes Using GQ3.3

The Royal Navy Historical Option

Carriers: These are only available if the Allies get TE 6 on either GT 3 or 4 and for that GT only as a free CG mission.

CVA Indomitable (Illustrious class)

MB: 4.5” (4 D12), Armor: CVA, Speed: 30 knots, AA: 2(12), AG: 3 Fulmer, 4 Albacore & 3 Sea Hurricane

Notes: +SW & -FC radar

CVL Hermes (Hermes class)

MB: 5.5” (2 D12), SB: 4” (2 D12), Armor: CVL, Speed: 25 knots, AG: 4 Swordfish

Notes: =SW radar

Heavy Cruisers: The Exeter (York class) is the sole RN CA (heavy cruiser) in the campaign that can be assigned to sweeps.

MB: 8” (3 D12), SB: 4” (2 D12), TT: 2 BS triple mounts, Speed: 32 knots, Armor: CL(CS), AA: 1(4)

Notes: -SW radar

The Cornwall (modified Kent class) is only available on game turns 3 or 4 if the Allies get TE (theater event) 6 which is the British carrier group. She can only sortie in the CG mission and therefore will not figure into a surface engagement.

MB: 8” (4 D12), SB: 4” (2 D12), TT: n/a, Speed: 32 knots, Armor: CA(CS), AA: 1(4)

Notes: no radar

Light Cruisers: The D class, Danae, Dragon and Durban are what the Brits start out with.

Notes: no radar, cannot rapid fire & subject to ship availability

The Mauritius (Fiji class) is available as a CD reinforcement on GT (game turn) 2 only (take her or lose her). She can be assigned (by rule) the GT she is received, but it is moot as the Brits used their only CD to take her.

MB: 6” (6 D12), SB: 4” (2 D12), TT: 2 BS triple mounts, Armor: CL(CL), Speed: 32 knots, AA: 1(3)

Notes: - SW & FC radar, she is subject to ship availability, a fire causes 1 hull box & extinguished on 1-3

The Emerald (E class) is available for GT3 only if the Brits get TE 7.

MB: 6” (3 D12), SB: 4” (1 D12), TT: 4 BS quad mounts, Armor: CL, Speed: 33 knots, AA: 1/2 (1)

So, a total of 5 heavy cruisers, 16 light cruisers, 1 AA cruiser, 15 modern destroyers and 18 old destroyers that could possibly be assigned to sweeps with 1 heavy cruiser and 1 light cruiser only being available for a single turn. The rest are strictly a TE generated CG. The Americans suffer at night while the rest although not equal to the Japanese are at least in the running. Consolidation at Surabaya and Darwin into maximum sized (6 cruisers and up to 12 DDs) sweeps is IMHO your best bet. Because of Japanese EAF CD choices you may be able to abort less than 4 Convoys to win. But 4 EAF convoys is the most you will need to abort.

Something to think about if you choose a capital ship start option. You do not need to sink or cripple the Japanese BB/BC to make them go away. By rule the Japanese capital ships are withdraw after all the Allied capital ships are sunk or crippled. And all Allied capital ships make wonderful cruiser killers and they do not discriminate between heavy and light. They damage them just the same. The RN 15” and 14” as well as the Dutch 13.5” are a 3 to 1 equivalent hits ratio against CA-CS armor. The Dutch 11” are 2 to 1. The PoW at 15,000 yards (the Japanese 14” do not penetrate her BA until 12,000) is hitting on 1,2 & 10 with 5 D12. She rates 1 hit per GT with a D12 left over at that range. If she gets that 5th die to hit every four GT, then we are talking 5 hits in 4 GT as average. In addition, I of those hits rated to be a 2 which is 2 hits or an average of 6. 6 times 3 is 18 hits and there not too many heavy cruisers that are not going to be crippled (if not sunk) with that many hits. The other Allied capital ships are not as good at killing cruisers, but they are good enough. In fact, crippled is good enough to remove a cruiser from the campaign so sinking them is over kill and a waste of hits. The Japanese player if he is smart is not going to expose his CAs to your capital ships. But the bright glory of a apparent chance to sink your capital ships just might blind him a bit.
