Hey everyone, played my first game of GQIII this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I did have one question on an oddity that seems, according to the guys I talked to while playing, to happen more then is historically accurate as far as I know.Just to get it out of the way first, I'm ok with rules written that don't always provide a historically accurate result, it's a tough thing to write workable rules. That being said, it seems, atleast at the venue I played at, that it happens often that a ship that has fired a torpedo salvo, occasionally runs into its own torpedo salvo. It happened during our game atelast once that I can think of, and from the stories I got from these guys playing, it happens on a regular occasion. Now barring the fact that maybe these guys just arent' paying attention to where their ships and spreads are going, I'm curious as to if we're playing these rules wrong, or if it's just an oddity in the rules? Now I'm not a WWII naval expert by any means, I've read a few books, and watched a few documentaries and that's about it but I've personally never heard that running into your own torpedoes was a big issue during the war, and from what I understand, torpedoes generally move at roughly equal speeds or faster then most of the ships firing them?So I fire a spread of torpedoes, then do a U-turn that same round that brings me into my own torpedoe track, I still need to make an attck on the firing ship, even though physics says the torpedoes would be long gone by the time the ship managed to turn around and head the other direction? If that's the case I'm thnking about home ruling it to where the firing ship is inelligible as a target the firing round for it's own torpedoe spreads, but I'd like to make sure we're doing this correctly in the first place?

This has been discussed in the past, though I don't recall if it was here or in the Yahoo group. To recap:You are correct in that the rules as written do exempt a ship from being hit by its own torpedoes. The discussion previously also acknowldged that the situation is artificial based on the concept of the game turn and sequence of play, and could not happen in real life. Your options are:1. Using the "it hurts when I do that, so don't do that principle", play the rule as written.2. Adopt a house rule as you mentioned.

prorated movment for own torpedos are sufficient solution and quick - you don't calculate - that always make impossible to running into your own torpedoes :)

DOH! I meant to say the rules as written do NOT exempt a ship from being hit by its own torps.

While the rules don't specifically rule out running over your own torpedoes, common sense (and simple pro-rating of movement) does. Keep in mind, not every case is going to be addressed (unless, of course, you want a rulebook that rivals the New York City phonebook in thickness!) and common sense would/should prevail. I might add that pulling a U-turn OVER the tracks of your recently launched torpedoes is neither a smart thing to do nor is it accepted doctrine in most navies of the time.

This was covered in another thread quite soon after GQIII was released. The ruling was simple — the firer cannot be hit by her own torpedoes, unless one boomerangs, or some such special event occurs. Now her cohort, there's a different matter...Gregory

thanks for the replies guys, we'll just make sure that firing ships can't be hit by their own spreads on the first round!
