So I've found someone local who wants to try out GQ. I need a good introductory scenario (would prefer something historical) for a two-player game playable in a long evening.Suggestions?Theater unimportant as I will be building all the ships for this scenario regardless.

For a try-out, it's hard to beat the old standbys: River Plate (Graf Spee v. Ajax and Achilles) or Denmark Strait (Bismarck and Prinz Eugen v. Hood and Prince of Wales). Destroyer tactics can tax even experienced players; I wouldn't give a new player a destroyer squadron.

I agree. Those two are as easy and straightforward as they come, and are reasonably balanced, although you need to add HMS Exeter to the British side for the River Plate battle. By the end of either of them you will understand the gunnery rules fully.Gregory

I concur. Constrained by wanting an historical introductory scenario (which I would interpret to mean daytime engagement) for two players (i.e. not too many ships), your options are fairly limited.I suspect with the GQ3 equivalent hit mechanic, River Plate might be a little more interesting than it used to be with GQ 1/2 (where it seemed Graf Spee never had a chance). However, the same mechanic makes Prinz Eugen little more than a spectator at Denmark Strait. If you play Denmark Strait, make sure you download the corrected SDS for Hood, and you might want to come up with some scenario rules to account for PoW not being fully worked up. Thoughts include up a row to hit and/or some roll for some number of guns, if not a whole turret, to become inoperable until repaired by the contractor's workmen who were still on board.

Has anyone actually made a scenario for River Plate that they could share? I know it seems simplistic but when you're reading the rules for the first time (with no teacher around) and trying to absorb and pull all the jargon and minutiae together, it's pretty overwhelming. Thanks!

I have played this scenario several times and it is a good one for learning the basics of the game. The conditions were very clear (20 miles visibility) with very little sea running, so I'd put the visibility at 40000yds and the sea state at 2. For the ships, the logs already have Graf Spee and Ajax. For Achilles, use a twin of Ajax (Achilles was a sister ship of Ajax) and for Exeter, use York (Exeter was a sister ship of York). Deploy the two forces at maximum visibility (your choice as to formation for the British) and have at it.

Thanks! What about morale for both sides?

I'd rate both sides as Regular. Both sides had long serving crews, but no real combat experience.
