Capittani Class - these are included under Excorts on the ship logs - I'm just checking is the armour rating correct - no hull armour, CS turrets? And given that does anyone have armour ratings for the old WW1 Mirabello class and inter-war Leone class Scout Cruisers, which were re-classified as DDs in WW2? In an absence of knowledge I'd rate them as DD - but the Capittani rating above opens the question...So far I'm working on with:Mirabello - listed at 34 kts and 1540 disp, therefore (on the DD scale) 34,29,22,15,10,5 Hull Boxes with 8 x 4" (singles), 2x3" AA, 4x18" TT and 100 mines (I also have it listed as 32 kts and have a question against the disp figure - I've seen 1383 disp listed)Leone - listed at 34kts and 1550 disp, therefore (on the DD scale) 34,29,22,15,10,5 Hull Boxes with 8 x 4.7" (twins) and a pair of 14pdrs - what do they rate as? and 6x18" TTI also have Leone referenced as 34kts and 1743 (2648 full load) disp, therefore (on teh DD scale) 34, 31, 27, 22, 15, 10, 5 Hull Boxes with 8 4.7" (twins) 2x40mm AA, 4x20mm AA, 4x18" TT (twins) and 60 minesCan anyone refine that data - or add extra. Were they equipped with sonar and/or DC?cheersZippee

According to the data in my library, the Capittani class had very little armor with some minor protection for their main battery. Functionally, they were effectively large DDs.Your data for the Mirabello and Leon classes is consistant with the sources with one clarification. Fraccaroli noted in his book on the Italian Navy in WWII that their older, worn engineering plants resulted in lower effective speeds by the start of WWII. He lists a maximim speed of 29 Kts for these ships. Also, the Leone class is listed as having four 21" torpedo tubes rather than 18" tubes. These ships were not armored.Incidently, Mirabello will be listed in her WWI mode with a 6" gun on the Ship Logs of Fleet Action Imminent.

OK thanks, just checking as it 'looked' odd - certainly my resident Italian admiral queried it :-)Yes 29 kts would be understandable by 1940...Hmm haven't seen 21" TT listed elsewhere. I also have Leone listed as either 6 x 18" or 4 x 18", I wonder if the reduction there is actually 4 x 21". Choices, choices :-)I'm not sure when the 6" was removed - either on reclassification as DD sometime in the erarly 30s or when 'modernised' in 1936 for Red Sea duty. As 1936 is the only hard date I've found I'm using that as my 'rule of thumb' for the changes - would only matter for fictional Interwar games anyway.Any judgement call on the Hull Boxes - 6 or 7? I'm tempted to make them 7 just to reflect the reclassification...they're hardly super-destroyers and sometimes it's best to exagerate the differences slightly IMOthanks againZippee

I am getting my data from Fraccaroli’s ”Italian warships of world war II”.I guess it is the same Fraccaroli that the previous poster refers to, just a different book, since this one seems to have some additional information. According to this book:The Capitani Romani class was unarmoured, although light armour” was planned”Mirabello (Mirabello, Riboty)Displacement standard/full: 1811 / 2303 tonsMaximum speed designed 35, ever reached 35Best sea speed during WWII: 27 knotsArmament 8- 4/45, 8-20mm/70 and 4- 17.7” TT, could carry 100 minesReclassed from scout to destroyers 1938NOTE: The 6” guns were removed at the end of WW I. During the war RIBOTY had 4-4/45 removed. Leone (Leone, Pantera, Tigre)Displacement standard/full: 1743 / 2648 tonsMaximum speed designed 34, ever reached 34.3Best sea speed during WWII: 29 knotsArmament 8- 4.7/45, 2-40mm/39, 4-20mm/65 and 4- 21” TT, could carry 60 minesReclassed from scout to destroyers 1938Hope this is of some help...
