Healy - Very nice work on the Yahagi. I agree that there is something very appealing about some of the Japanese ships. One of my favorites is the Takao. This is a GHQ model. It was done several years ago.

Just lovely...the Takao-class and the Myōkō-class before it were just some beautiful ships; love the clipper bows. Really nice job on the model, especially those floatplanes!

On the table, I have found Takao's arrangement of five turrets of twin eight-inch a decided advantage over three turrets of triple eight-inch of the USN's New Orleans-class, for example. Lose two turrets on Takao, you still have 60% of your main armament; lose two turrets on San Francisco and you only have 33% of your main armament remaining. That can make for some tough going.

Healey, that is excellent work on the Yahagi.  Begemot, your Takao is superb.  Both are examples of 1/2400th scale modeling at its finest.  Well done!

A few USN destroyers in various schemes/measures:

USN DDs

Got one more unpainted Mahan-class, then we're out of unpainted USN DDs.

Very nice work on those U.S. DDs, Healey.  I just happened to have painted a Mahan class DD several years ago.  It is in the GHQ catalog.

I also painted a Farragut as well.

Those 2 along with my Fletcher are the extent of my currently painted WWII USN destroyer collection.  I have about all the classes GHQ makes but need to put paint on more of them one of these days.  Your work in inspirational, Healey.

Thanks, Peter; I love the prewar classes of USN DDs. They might not be the most capable on the table, but they look great.

Who's your supplier of Humbrol, Peter? The outfit I'd been ordering from just dropped the line.

Thanks, Healey!  I have been ordering my Humbrols from Burbank House of Hobbies in CA.  We also have Hobby Depot in Tempe, AZ that carries them as well.  It is easier just to order them as Hobby Depot is about an hour from where I live.

Thanks for that...I'll look them up. An order of Tamiya acrylics came in yesterday, but I've been wanting to get back to some enamels for awhile. I've had some issues recently with painting acrylics over a flat enamel basecoat, something I've not experienced for quite some time.

I've been having some trouble keeping the Zeppelins attached to their plastic-disc bases; nothing seems to want to hold the wire in the hole in the clear plastic base. A friend of mine, a professional model-maker, recommended watch crystal cement, specifically G-S Hypo:

G S Hypo

Small tube, comes with a very fine needle applicator. We'll see how it holds up.

From Amazon...where else.

Here's a pic of a jig design I use for basing aircraft; it's just a couple bits of corrugated, with a pin-hole drilled down through the center:

Basing jig

It's a one-use-only design (you gotta cut it apart to get your item out). The key is to make sure it sits flat on a level surface and that you drill the pin-hole perfectly perpendicular through both layers of corrugated (not easy). It looks a bit tilted here, but I think that's because I didn't hold the phone straight when I took the pic. Once dry, I just cut it apart to extract the piece.

USS Minneapolis as painted by my good friend Matt Schreck:

That is a very nice looking USS Minneapolis, Healey.  It looks like it would look great on any gaming table.

Intended as a placeholder for the WWII fleet-cabinet until a better version comes along, Panzerschiffe's HNLMS Java, as she likely appeared in early 1942:

HNLMS Java

Running down her final paint scheme was interesting, most prewar photos showing her with a light-colored natural deck and light-gray hull and uppers. However, a number of sources have her 1942 hull in a medium and dark gray scheme, with the deck a dark gray and her uppers a medium gray.

I added a main-mast and derrick made from a bit of brass wire. My soldering skills ain't what they used to be, and attempts at using the resistance iron didn't give a neat result. I ended up using a dab of watch-crystal cement between the two pieces, then tried to trim away the excess after it dried thoroughly. Results are mixed, but better than not having it at all.

I tried to use the GHQ model of Java as a guide, but it doesn't compare well structurally with the photographs I have (most of which, admittedly, predated the war by a couple years). Lenton's Royal Netherlands Navy (1968) didn't help much either, so more research required. Until then, this simple model will suffice.

That looks very good, Healey!  I think I only have the de Ruyter for the Dutch so far.  I have lots of other GHQ ships, especially American, Japanese, Italian WWII with lesser numbers of British and German ships.  I also have a large collection of GHQ British and German WWI ships.  Sadly most are still unpainted as I have been focusing on getting my WWII and Cold War land forces up to speed.

While the table is silent, we'll make a run at knocking down the lead/resin pile...first up, a 1/100-scale FV104 Samaritan:

FV104 Samaritan A

FV104 Samaritan B

FV104 Samaritan C

A 3D print by HQMinis.com, with a base-coat of ModelMaster 1910 Flat Dark Green, a bit of Americana burnt sienna craft paint on the tracks, then three washes of Vallejo olive green (76.519), black (76.518), and European dust (76.523), then a dry-brush with Vallejo off-white (70820). Decals by I-94 (missing a small one for the front valance). Added a whip-antenna of brass wire.

Thanks. Found a cache of H-35's I didn't know I had. Not enough decals to finish them. Moving on to other stuff.

Nope, painted the H-35s after receiving a few more decal sets. Here's two pair, one by Miniature Tank Company, the other by HQMinis. They are virtually identical, although the print by HQMinis is a bit more refined:

Love these little 1/100-scale French tanks, even if they are little more than target practice on the table.
