That is a definitely lovely model, Healey!  I went to an IPMS show in Phoenix back in 2004 and had a great time.  One of these days I will get back to painting some ships again.

I have just stepped into the world of 1:6000 Figurehead. I don't wish to use the supplied bases as I want to have the ship name on the base. Unlike my ships in other scales, I recognize the need for a thicker base to handle the ships. What bases (home made and store bought) have others used?

Jeff, here's a few examples of the based 1/6000-scale Figurehead models we use here:

 

 

These bases are homemade out of Litko plywood bits with labels designed and printed using MS Paint. We've recently reduced the thickness of the plywood we are using and have not experienced any warpage after cementing things together (a concern). All of the bases are a uniform width and length (1/2"x1-1/2"), regardless of the model size...this gives a nice uniform look to a column of ships.

 

The kicker is the destroyers, which Figurehead casts on the base. People have shown me models that they've clipped off the base, then filed down to get something reasonably close to an accurate waterline miniature...I just have been unable to do it. It's extraordinarily fiddly trying to file them down. Instead, we usually just use counters with the scale hull outlined on the label. It works, but of course lacks "the look".

 

I've also based Shapeways printed 1/4800-scale stuff using the same basing technique:

 

 

The bases are a bit longer to accommodate the larger miniatures.

 

Anyway, that's what's going on here.

I have given this a lot of thought and have decided on a COA. I will put together a few ships to see if it works for me. Will post the results.
