I just noticed that there is no column on the Boarding Chart for crew factors rated Raw.  Does this mean that Raw crews are unable to board unless the attempt is unopposed?  Asking for a scenario....

Well spotted Brian, I read those rules very carefully when trying to put a boarding flowchart together and completely missed that. I wonder if the intention was that raw crews can't board other vessels...

Well, at the risk of turning this into a mutual admiration society, the only reason I found it was that I was using your flowchart to run through a possible boarding action.  So you deserve a little credit for this one as well.

G' Day Brian and Trotsky,

Indeed, the boarding flowchart is an impressive piece of work.  There are a lot of decisions to be made, even if they are simple choices at each stage.

Good question about Raw crews.  The intent was that Raw crews - defined as "a crew composed primarily of a draft of landsmen and non-sailors" with less than two months training in harbor or two weeks at sea in Section 6.6 - would lack the cohesion needed to attempt an opposed boarding of another vessel.  They might have to defend against a boarding attempt, hence the Raw column on the MELEE CRT, or could board another vessel if unopposed.

But, the rules don't clearly spell this out... My oversight.  An update will be included in some supplemental PC material we are currently evaluating.

In the meantime, the following should be added to Section 11.6 :

Quality  Raw crews lack the cohesion to make an opposed boarding attempt.  They can only board other vessels when unopposed.

Good catch!

LONNIE

This is one of the things that I've come to really like about this set of rules.  That is, when you run into something that is a bit unclear you can usually drop back, read around that area and pretty much figure out what was meant.
