This question is really for the FAI forum but is relevant for GQ3, whose forum appears to have more readers...

I've been using the FAI rules for a few months & yesterday was playing solo with a flotilla of RN DDs against a division of HSF BBs (3rd BS, 5th Squadron).

This was mainly to try if RN DD tactics work, ie approach at about 30 degrees on the enemy bow & fire torpedoes at 3-5000 yards.

Clearly, the HSF BB secondary & tertiary armament would come into play.

SMS Konig ship's drawings show 7 x 5.9" on each side, with 1 facing  directly for'd, 1 aft & the other 5 as broadside.

The tertiaries are 3 on each side, 2 facing for'd & 1 broadside.

The ship log for Konig has 4 secondary boxes for each side (each box representing a pair of guns, even though there were 7 historically, not 8). What would their arcs be... clearly the for'd 5.9" can definitely fire for'd & the aft definitely can't. The remainder will have a partial for'd arc.

How are these firing arcs be represented in the game? It would be fairly critical if launching a DD attack fine on the BB's bow with limited secondaries able to fire for'd?

Also, the tertiary battery is represented on the log is a single red box- does this mean because it was open sights it was pretty much useless at anything but the shortest range & mainly had AA ammunition??

At least for GQ3, the short, basic answer is the port/starboard secondaries' arc is the port/starboard broadside arc - see 1.5.3.

There would be obvious exceptions for specific ships, like the Nelson and Richelieu class BBs and Dunkerque class BCs.

The rule used to be (i.e. in GQ1/2) that half of each battery (port/starboard) could fire forward or aft.  I did not see this so stated in GQ3, instead in 1.5.3 it says "Port and starboard forward

secondary/tertiary mounts can also fire forward." and "Port and starboard after secondary/tertiary mounts can also fire aft."  My bolding.

I can tell you that barring the use of any obvious ship-exceptions like I mentioned above, I still use the old "half rule".  However, since I play WWII, we're typically talking about turret-mounted secondaries.  I think if I was doing a scenario with old ships where the secondaries were casmate-mounted, I might call out that they can't fire as much forward/aft - i.e. maybe only 1 die worth of guns.

As far as the red boxes, the way I remember it in GQ3 is that they refer to [typically tertiary] guns that are primarily for AA, and don't have directors (one exception: 1.5.12 Tribal Class DDs); however, even doing a key-word search through the .pdf, I couldn't find where it was actually so stated.  I did find it addressed in another forum post: https://www.odgw.com...ps/?hl=tertiary

Hope some of all that helps...

Dave

Thanks Dave. That's actually what it says in the rules!.....it sometimes needs a second pair of eyes to make clear what is already explained quite clearly.... :-)

Unfortunately, my only opponent has no real interest in the mechanics & only wants to see BBs explode :-(
