Assualt & Small Craft Table lists some subchasers –US – PC 173’ steel subchaser & SC 110’ wooden subchaserJapan – PC Cha 1 subchaserThese craft have no DC capacity listed so are unable to attack submerged subs. In fact only the steel subchaser has a gun (3”) which is capable of damaging a sub if surfaced. Some brief research on the internet has revealed that the Jap vessels carried 22 DCs and the steel subchaser 6.Without this DC capacity these vessels are not very useful. Is this the intention in the rules ?Joe

Some brief research on the internet has revealed that the Jap vessels carried 22 DCs...Without this DC capacity these vessels are not very useful.

According to my sources, from 1943 on, the Cha class had their DC outfits severely reduced (some removed altogether) and were converted to minesweepers. Generally speaking, the effectiveness of small vessels in this class (including the 110' SC, 173' SC and others of similar size used by other nations) in the ASW role was, at best, a mixed bag. Their ability to find, effectively track and attack a modern submarine was limited and it says something that these vessels were often sucessfully converted to roles well outside their original design (for example, the 173' SC developement as a 'barge busting' gunboat). The table, therefore, reflects what actually happened in their employment (as opposed to what was over-optimistically expected). That being said, the ASW capacity can be added, if desired. At best, I'd give them the equilvalent of hydrophones for detection and a limited (at most, 1-2) DC attacks.
