I understand the definition of CVAs, and I see how they are annotated on the ship logs. What I can't seem to find is any practical significance for the armoured hangars, in game terms. The armour seems to play no role in assessing gunfire and bombing damage. For gunfire, perhaps the "4-5" Hangar Fire result should be included in the results requiring penetration? For bombing, there is no apparent distinction between CVs and CVAs, so the armour has no effect.Have I missed something?

Actually, the armored hangars and flight decks (which are only on the British CVAs and one Japanese CVA) do have an impact; its just not very explicit. The normal armor value of a CV or CVL is the equilvalent of CA, as indicated on the table on page 1-11 (under Armor) and noted in para 1.6. This normally applies only to the main deck of a CV and not the flight deck. In the case of a CVA, this armor extends to the hangar and flight deck. So, when calculating penetration by bombs and gunfire, hangar hits on a CV are considered as unarmored while hits on a CVA hangar would have to penetrate CA armor to be effective. (BTW, CVEs are considered to have no armor whatsoever).

Thanks. That makes sense, and is what I expected. I just can't find it in the rules.
