Tonight we had a WW1 game between the Russian and American fleet. Both navies used pre dreadnoughts with a mixed bag of guns. One of my ships was the USS Kansas, with 2x 12-inch guns and 4x 8-inch guns, 2per side. The damage done to her was one main turret. Now the question is, which one, the nearest 8-inch or one of the fore or aft 12 inch guns. The rules say that the gun damaged will be one of the fore or aft guns, or the one nearest to the enemy. This has created a bit of confusion, as the American 8-inch is in a heavy black outlined box with a number 2 inside. So it is my understanding that the 8-inch gun is a main turret, so in the example above which gun would be damaged?

The main guns on Kansas are the 12" while the secondaries are the 8" turreted guns and the 7" casemated guns. So, in your example, the damage would be marked against one of the two 12" turrets. The Kansas is a unique case since it has four batteries (most ships covered in FAI have, at most, three). For ships with four batteries (thankfully there are only a few such ships in FAI), the middle two batteries are considered the secondary battery for declaring damage. For the Connecticut class (which Kansas is part of) the 12" is the main gun, the 8" and 7" are the secondary, and the 3" are the tertiary. For the Virginia class, the 12" is the main gun, the 8" and 6" are the secondary, and the 3" are the tertiary.
