Ok we're live at the Guns of August Convention in Williamsburg Va. Question from a player. This person normally plays Siegkrieg.1) Does speed affect gunnery? If a ship is moving 25+ knots should it not be harder to hit?2) A ship has 2 DCT. Presumably these are forward and aft. Is there any penality using the aft DCT to shoot the forward turrets?? Thanks --Kenny

1) Does speed affect gunnery? If a ship is moving 25+ knots should it not be harder to hit?

Not really. By the 1930's, fire control systems could easily handle the variations in speed (target and firer) with little difficulty. What was more of an issue were changes in heading, causing offsets in the bearing to the target (but even this could be compensated for). In fact, by this time, fire control systems had advanced to such a high degree that an anaylsis done in the 1990's by the USN noted that they can be made smaller, but they can’t be made any more reliable or any more accurate.

2) A ship has 2 DCT. Presumably these are forward and aft. Is there any penality using the aft DCT to shoot the forward turrets??

No. The the DCT were only part of the overall system and only mounted the main rangefinders. The key to the system was the computing room far below decks. In the case of US practice (and others as this was fairly standard), range information could be taken from any of the main rangefinders to control all or any part of the main battery. In game terms, the loss of a DCT (due to a critical hit) represents the not so much the loss of the director control tower but instead the degradation of the whole system (through loss of communication links, damage to rangefinders, damage to the computing gear, etc).
