Finally got around to reading Battle of Suriago Strait by Anthony P. Tully. In the book, Tully makes several references to the IJN using radio-telephone voice communication, and in fact actually refers to it as "TBS".Is there merit in modifying optional rule 1.20 Tactical Communication Between Ships to allow the IJN, at some point, to utilize it?Any idea as of what date?Besides the USN and RN (and probably RAN/RNZN, starting in 1942 IAW 1.20 - and probably Free French ships refit in the US or UK?), did any other nations develop "TBS"? I don't recall anything in Hara's Japanese Destroyer Captain that led me to deduce the use of IJN "TBS" in the Solomons battles he was in - but maybe I'll have to go read it again :) Dave

Tully's book is the first instance I've came across referencing the use of TBS (or its equilvalent) by the IJN (I know Kaigun by Evans and Peattie or any of the other standard references makes no mention of TBS use by the IJN). So this appears to be the result of new research (new information surfacing is always exciting). As to when TBS would become available to the IJN (based on Tully's assertion), mid to late 1944 would appear to be a logical point, since the IJN did a lot of upgrading (primarily AA and radar) during this time period. Additionally, we don't really have any evidence of use prior to the Leyte battles. So, if I was to add this to a game, I'd say limited use for mid 1944 with more use by late 1944.As to who else was using TBS during WWII, the most extensive users were the USN (who pioneered its design and use in 1940) and the RN and Commonwealth navies (which became fairly common by 1942) and the French after they joined the allies after 1943 as their ships went through refits in US and UK yards. Currently, there is little evidence of it use by the Italians or the Germans.

Tully's book has been criticized for some inaccuracies so I would not rely upon it too heavily, Japanese technological improvements during WWII were few and far between.
