I have a torpedo mount of five torpedoes that I fire at three ships all in the same line of fire and range band so all needing a '7' to hit.

The first ship gets hit on a 4, so we roll again for a '6'. This would be a hit on an initial roll, but is a miss on a second hit, as we needed a 4 or less (5 torp mount -1 initial hit) correct?

The next ship would also be hit on a '7' as it is in the same range band. However, since it is a secondary target, I'm uncertain if the initial hit on that ship would be on a '7' as per the other ship, or on a '4' or less, since that would be the number needed for a consecutive hit on a 5-torpedo mount that has already had one hit. Let's say the roll is a '2' so we get a hit no matter what. The next roll is a '9' which would miss regardless.

What is the hit roll on the third ship? A '7' or a '3' or less? Same question as above.

Thanks in advance!

Taking your example of a 5 torpedo spread with a 'to hit' of 1-7.

The first roll scores a hit and if the roll is less the number of torpedoes in the spread, you'd roll for a second hit on the same target but on the '4' torpedo column since 1 torpedo has been expended. If the second roll hits and is less than 4 (the current number of active torpedoes in the spread), then you'd roll for a possible third hit on the '3' torpedo column (2 torpedoes having found their target). And so on until you either miss or expend all the torpedoes.

Now in your example, let's assume the roll for a second hit on the first target missed. Then you'd roll for hit on the second target using the 'to hit' column for 4 torpedoes at that range with no adjustment. If you roll under the number remaining in the spread (now 4), you'd score a hit on the second target and reroll for a possible second hit on the 3 torpedo column.

Now in your example, the first and second ships each get hit by a single torpedo. The third ship would roll on the 3 torpedo hit column (2 torpedoes having already hit) at the appropriate range band without any further modifications.

You continue to roll until you either run out targets in the spread or torpedoes. In all cases, the only adjustment you make is to reduce the number of torpedoes in the spread (and, thereby, the 'to hit' column used) by subtracting those torpedoes that have already hit. You do not adjust the 'to hit' roll.
