Just wondering if anyone has successfully played Fleet Action Imminent without also needing General Quarters III?

Absolutely. I haven't played GQ but assume FAI is in some ways less complex because you can reasonably disregard aircraft. Though zeppelins are exceedingly cool :-)

Certainly! FAI is a stand alone game and doesn't require GQ3.3.
And Doug has it right, zeppelins (and blimps; don't forget the RN's hordes of blimps) are wicked cool!!!

You need GQ III for submarine operations (amended by FAI section 9.2), otherwise FAI is free-standing.
