Hello Fellas,

im a newbie in Post Captain. I just bought some Black Seas Ships second Hand at a price i couldnt resist und then asked for some Rulesystems.
PC got my attention and i wrote a AAR and Rulereview after my first game.
Since you all are more familiar with the ruleset than me, the Review wont give you a new sight but its a start to introduce myself. I hope you enjoy. Because im no native speaker (im german) i hope you can understand everything

A round is always divided into three subturns, in which you can move and shoot at any time (but reloading then takes 2-4 subturns again, depending on the faction and the condition of the crew). At the beginning of a round, the wind can turn and you can assign your crew to new tasks.
I had decided to limit myself to maneuvering and shooting and leave out crew management, collisions and boarding for the time being. However, crew management was so easy that I had no problems keeping an eye on it.
Anyway, it started with an English 5th rate frigate named Endymion, with the wind at her back, chasing a French 5th rate named Clorinde.
If that doesn't mean anything to you (as it did to me before), the ships in Master&Commander were 6th rate frigates and therefore a bit smaller.

The sequence of turns and maneuvering went surprisingly quickly. Since I had to read some things twice while studying the rules, I had expected something more difficult, but the game itself is pretty quick and easy.
The Clorinde heaved to and fired a salvo at the Endymion at far too far a range. Wow, shooting is also very easy. I'm excited. Hardly any damage was done, but now I had a feeling for how it works.
The Englishman caught up as the wind shifted and the Clorinde turned 180 degrees to her starting position. Both frigates managed to broadside each other. It should be said that you can shoot at any time after or before a movement (no matter by whom) - but of course the opponent can too.
When shooting at an average combat distance, it quickly becomes clear that taking damage is always very annoying, but rarely fatal. In order to defeat a ship, however, several skillful attacks are required. Two volleys with lucky hits are not enough here. idR is fought until the surrender, was sunk at this time only rarely and that is also shown in the rules.

The Clorinde made a small maneuver to get into the wind and pick up speed, which turned out to be a mistake.
This put the Endymion in an angle from which she could only be fired on with the makeshift cannons at the stern of the Frenchman and fired a full broadside herself, this time also using the carronades (smaller, heavy-calibre cannons, short range, but whoa! ). This time there were a few heavy hits and the Clorinde lost her stern mast.
Losing a mast reduces speed, nothing new. However, there are also a few disadvantages as long as this is not clipped (between two rounds, i.e. as soon as a three-subturn is completed, the crew can make a fairly simple throw to sever the hanging rigging). The mast both has an anchor effect that keeps the ship drifting in the direction of the wind, and also drapes a couple of cannons (one of six areas).
This is where my game showed me that with such a mast in tow, movement becomes very predictable. So the Endymion now maneuvered to the other side of the Clorinde. There the French frigate had some cannons hung from the mast, while the cannons of the Endymion had not yet fired on this side and now the next broadside followed, which of all things swept away the still exposed gun deck.

The Clorinde now twice botched her throw to cut the mast (which is statistically very rare), while the Endymion's crew reloaded their cannons one after another at point-blank range and waved to the French crew.
At this point, I was a bit annoyed that I hadn't read the rules for marines. Otherwise the soldiers on both ships could have volleyed at each other.
Alright, so instead of firing guns, it was time to smile (or rather grin maliciously) and wave.

Various parts of the ship were damaged and both the crew and marines on board suffered casualties.
However, the damage that the Endymion dealt, due to the circumstances with little return fire, was so randomly distributed that the Clorinde had to take damage in so many different places that it was still not dramatic, at least initially, although the situation slowly really got worse. After two rounds, unable to pull off a proper maneuver and constant close-range shelling, some parts of the ship were so damaged that other crews would have given up the fight at that point.
The rules state that if certain spots are at 30% damage, Morale tests must be taken.
But here, too, the statistics were not decisive for my game. The French seamen were damn tough dogs in this fight!
Finally the Clorinde managed to separate from her mast, she had the initiative and started a maneuver to finally be able to launch a counterattack. For this project, however, they had to allow an attack by the English.....
However, this attack was one too many for the frigate. The damage that Endymion had already caused was too great. This attack happened with a lot of luck with the dice. I threw a critical hit and it destroyed the Clorinde's foremast of all things. Now all resistance was broken and the Clorinde lowered her flag while her captain loosened his saber to present it to the Englishman.

So i look forward to my next steps. Im not sure yet if i base the ships. I think they look fine, but touching could damage the Minis.
What do you recommend about the next steps, is it more fun to add some briggs, or should i try two 3rd liner assaulting each other? Also i read that here are some historical 1on1 Szenarios for download, but i couldnt find them.

Best regards

Gruβ Armstrong,

Thank-you very much for the report - the pictures are excellent as well.

I'm in the process of reading the rules, and have not yet played my first game (my ships are still in the Post), so this is very valuable to me.

Sounds like you had lots of fun, and look forward to hearing more from you!

If you haven't already, check out the single ship scenarios in the resources section.
