I assume even daytime visual detection is performed during the Detection Phase (even though stated Night and Low Visibility scenarios only)? thx

Another question, after plotting the torpedo attack, when does it move; Movement Phase, Torpedo Attack Phase? thx

James,
The paradigm for daytime visual detection is it is automatic, out to the maximum visibility. Of course visibility can be inhibited by squalls, fog, sea haze or smoke.
Torpedoes are launched in the Tactical Plot Phase, and the torpedoes "move" in the Torpedo Attack Phase.

Thank you. Is this correct: Turn 1 I detect enemy ship in Detection Phase, Turn 2 in Movement Phase I have the firer move straight for later half of move, Turn 3 in Tactical Plot Phase, I plot & launch torpedo?

James,
A couple of comments. First, the rules make a distinction between "detection" and "acquisition" (1.11.2), which I failed to highlight in my first response. I should have said "The paradigm for daytime visual acquisition is it is automatic, out to the maximum visibility." For the ship movement restrictions before firing torpedoes, you have it correct (1.4.5, Course).

I was thinking about your example a little more while I was on the treadmill. By the RAW, if the ship described by "Turn 1 I detect enemy ship in Detection Phase" went straight the last half of the Turn 1 Movement Phase, it could plot & launch torpedoes in the Turn 2 Tactical Plot Phase. This is where a scenario designer might want to add a special rule or two - e.g. if the ship/side in question was surprised, and not already at GQ, make them skip a turn of firing due to their slow reactions.

My understanding is that if your ship detects (if this occurs at night) an enemy ship on GT1 you can fire star shell at the end of the turn to illuminate it. If your ship acquires an enemy ship during GT1 you fire at it that turn. But the turn sequence places torpedo plots and resolution prior to the detection phase in a turn. This means that you have wait another turn to plot a torpedo attack. In other words, you detect on GT1 and plot your torpedo attack on GT2.
