ragozd,You should take a look at the Bonus Documents Design Files — Hull Boxes to see how they are figured. No ship has more than nine hull boxes. The calculation is not a straight linear relationship within or across classes.Gregory

Ragozd,The original General Quarters used a standard number of Hull Boxes for all ships. The Third Edition varies the number of Hull Boxes within a general classification of ships. As you can see by reviewing the Hull Box table in the Design Files [found in the Bonus Files], the number of hull boxes is not based on a linear extrapolation of tonnage. The number of Hull Boxes within a ship category, was determined using standard tonnage in conjunction with compartmentalization and, equally important, damage control. Thus, more than mere size was involved. This data was then compiled to create relative groups within a general ship category. The number of Hull Boxes represents my view of the relative capacity of a ship to withstand hull damage in relation to other ships in that classification. Since this reflects my judgement, it's understandable that other may come to different views. I posted the Hull Box table so that you could see how I grouped ships with in a category. With regard to the Yamato class, clearly they were very large. My research indicated that compartmentalization was generally quite good, with some short falls. Japanese damage control, however, was generally sub-standard. Hence, I gave them nine Hull Boxes in place of the normal seven for the capital ship category, which puts them in a group beyond the Iowas. How far beyond can be debated. At this remove, the Yamato class has taken on mythic proportions, replete with accounts of enormous numbers of torpedoes being required to sink them. But the data is somewhat contradictory. One submarine torpedo was enough to cause significant damage to Musashi in 1943. Many of the torpedoes used at Leyte Gulf were set for a depth of only 10 feet and may have hit belt armor with little effect. And, overclaiming by pilots - and those on the receiving end - is almost axiomatic. Hence, my perspective is tempered.Others may view them more favorably. One of the strengths of General Quarters is the ability to customize it and make it your own. We have provided a blank Ship Log in the Bonus Files which you can use to create your own view of the Yamato class.
