Page 1-13 informs us that some ships require two engineering hits to lose all power and others only one hit.How do we identify those ships on the ship log?Ships with the "one ER" notation to the right of their hull boxes require only one hit, OK so far. Therefore ships without a notation to the right of their hull boxes require two hits?Ships with the "UE" notation require two hits?Kriegsmarine ships with the "D" notation require "x" number of hits?I am a bit confused can someone please explain. Also is the "Gun batteries larger than 5" penalty only applicable to ships that lose all power?

"How do we identify those ships on the ship log?"Basically, all the ships that are not marked "One ER" take 2 engineering hits. (Two engineering hits is the default condition, if you will). "Ships with the "one ER" notation to the right of their hull boxes require only one hit, OK so far. Therefore ships without a notation to the right of their hull boxes require two hits?"Yes, that is correct."Ships with the "UE" notation require two hits?""UE" refers to Unit Engineering, which was a common design method from the 1930s on where boiler rooms and engine rooms were placed en echelon. The effect was to limit the effect of damage (a single torpedo or bomb hit could not wipe out the entire power plant). The details for this is under the Optional Rules (1.7.6 Unit Engineering Spaces)."Kriegsmarine ships with the "D" notation require "x" number of hits?"The "D" is for diesel powerplant. Some German ships used large (and I mean VERY large) diesels in lieu of steam turbines and boilers. These would take the same 2 engineering hits as steam powerplants since most have multiple diesels. The only real impact would be in a campaign where replenishment would come into play (kind of hard to refuel a ship with a diesel powerplant with black Bunker C fuel oil!)."I am a bit confused can someone please explain."And you should be any different from the rest of us? ;) Don't feel badly, there are still sections of the rules that give me pause."Also is the "Gun batteries larger than 5" penalty only applicable to ships that lose all power?"Yes, only when you lose all power do you lose the use of your batteries. This represents the loss of the power operated weapons so common on a modern ship. (In earlier periods, often the only power assisted weapons would've been your turreted main battery, with most, if not all, casemate mounted weapons being hand operated.)
