On the IJN surface combat chart "Gunfire Damage", the result "TT + Fire" is shown in red in the DD-TB column and black in the CA-CS column. Also in the DD-TB column we have "TT mount".Question - are they all treated the same as shown on page 1 - 13 Torpedo tubes ?The above got me thinking about the following.Who rolls dice for damage and critical hits? Sorry if above is a bit basic this was not a problem until I started playing with IJN.

I don't have the rules in front of me, but I'm pretty sure the only difference between "TT + Fire" and "TT mount" is that a ship with O2 torpedoes (aka Long Lance) catches on fire on the former. Either way you lose a torpedo mount. For torpedo damage, you need to roll on the torpedo damage table of the nationality whose torpedo it was. This means either the firing player rolls, or you hand the sheet over to the guy who just got torpedoed, and let him roll.

On the table, both 'TT + Fire' are the same (both should be in red; the black one was missed). The 'TT + Fire' results in loss of the torpedo mount plus a fire IF the torpedoes are the 24" oxygen fueled torpdoes. The Type 93 (or Long Lance; I hate that term!) was notorious for breaking into an intense fire if damaged due to its fuel. Also, for those ships mounting 21" torpedoes, the fire result does not apply (these were not as volatile as the 24"). For the 'TT Mount' result, you just lose the mount without a fire. As to who rolls for damage and criticals, the player of ship receiving the damage (or the victim, if you will) rolls for the types of damage and any critical hits on his CRT table. The reason for this is that the CRT damage tables are customized (in subtle ways) for that particular nation. For example, the 'TT + Fire' result only appears on the IJN table since they were most suspectible to that kind of damage. The only exception to this (currently) is the Torpedo Damage table; for that you roll the result based on the firer's CRT. (BTW, this will change with the update that Lonnie is preparing so the all damage results will be rolled off the table of the player receiving the hits).

As you mentioned, there were subtle differences to the damage charts, including the IJN Torpedo Damage chart. One difference being slightly higher damage results (IIRC there has been a thread on whether it was enough of a difference). If, say, the USN player is now going to roll on his own chart for a torpedo hit, how is this going to be accomplished? Right one column for 24" torpedoes, left one column for the smaller than 21" (and maybe US old 21")?We actually used to do that as a house rule playing GQ 1/2.Of course the basic drawback of the left/right column shift, or up/down row shift mechanic is that you can end up off the chart...

The changes will be covered when the update comes out and involves modifications to the Torpedo Damage tables. Until then, the original system would remain in effect.
