Hi, i just got a copy of GQ3.3 and a Friend of mine told me that there is also a simplified vers. of the Torpedo Attack with a D20, but i cant find anything in the Rules (WW2 Complete Book) or in the download section. Do the rules actual exist?

Thanks for your Help

He may be referring to division/half flotilla destroyers in FAI, the WWI version of GQ3.3. However, let me point out a way to quickly plot and resolve torpedoes in GQ3.3. It requires a bit of preparation. I use the Snapshot function in Acrobat (go to edit file and select more) to copy the ship logs I intend to use to a MSW doc. Beneath each ship's log that has torpedoes I write a torpedo marker number. I then write a shorthand description of each torpedo mount. I use the description to indicate which mount I'm plotting for. So, PSFT is Port Side Fore Torpedo mount as an example. Next to each mount designator I write GT (game turn plotted), tab and then Gyro (R or G 1 through 5 for the angle plotted)), tab and then Depth (standard or deep). You then put a piece of post-it with an arrow head and the appropriate torpedo marker number (for the ship you are plotting for) on the spot on the table where the torpedoes are fired from. You can plot torpedoes almost as fast as you can resolve gunnery doing it this way. I hope this helps.

Thanks for this Tip, the main reason im looking for this simplified Rules ist that i often play alone, and its hard to maneuver on Side when you just plant a Torpedos Attack on the other Side.

I went back and looked in GQ3.3, FAI and the FAI Supplement and I didn't find any rule specifically directed at a squadron torpedo attack either. I'd advise asking your buddy to be specific about what he considers a "squadron" torpedo attack and if he remembers where he saw the rule. That might give us what we need to find what he is talking about.  As it stands right now from what I can find; you may very well attack with an entire squadron/division/flotilla, but you would resolve each attack individually.

There is in Amendment 2 a section called 1.4.13 ALTERNATE Fleet Action Torpedo Attacks, but as Bill said, it doesn't appear to be a "squadron" torpedo attack.

in my version of the Rule book in the index it says

"1.4.13 Alternative Fleet Action Torpedo Attacks Deleted Incorporated into basic"
Sadly it seems like Amendment 2 is not available anymore

It may be that he confused the use of multi-ship (division/half flotilla) destroyer bases in FAI with the idea of a special squadron torpedo attack. I based my WWI destroyers that way as I intended to put on large actions (like Jutland) but I've never actually put them on a tabletop. I believe (and I could be wrong) that torpedo attacks by them are resolved as per individually based destroyers. And this forum is intended to resolve questions and IMHO this a good one, so you are not wasting my time. In fact, if you solve your problem with how to solo play torpedoes, please post the technique as it will be most useful to all.

I spoke w/ Lonnie.  Amendments 1 & 2 were incorporated in the GQ 3 main rules thus promoting it to GQ 3.3.  We started selling GQ 3.3 in 2014.

If you purchased the rules after 2014 you should be good.  If you purchased prior to 2014 and registered the copy with ODGW then you can DL the latest from the Private Download Library.

Hope this helps

‚ÄčIf that is what I think it is then it just offers you a faster way of plotting torpedoes by way of a gyro angle. The gyro angle gauge for WWI has two less gyro angle options than the WWII gyro angle gauge does. That represents the less sophisticated fire control of the period. I'd advise the use of the technique I mentioned before except that you are now selecting 1 angle out of three options, rather than 1 from 5. But are still resolving each torpedo attack separately no matter how many you launch in a turn.

And thanks Kenny. Your note tells me that my download of FAI a few months ago is the current version and that I'm not missing something and giving out bad info because of it.
