Hello,

‘’I must be reading the section 1.3.3 incorrectly. Could anyone possibly clarify this rule for me please?

 It states:

1.3.3 Damage

Captains resolve damage separately for each vessel involved in a collision or grounding:
1. Determine the difference in columns between the ship’s
type on the MINE & TORPEDO DAMAGE table and that of the other vessel involved. Left [larger] = “+” • Right [smaller] = “-”.
2. Locate the equivalent difference column on the COLLISION DAMAGE table. If both vessels have the same classification, select SAME. Use “Aground” for all vessels that have run aground, regardless of size.
3. Roll a D6 and cross-reference the result with the column to determine the damage resulting from the collision.
4. Record the damage on the Ship Log per Section 1.7.
• Submarine Always use the “- 4 • Sub” column of the COLLISION DAMAGE table to determine sub damage. Example: if a DD and a sub collide, the submarine uses the Sub column while the DD would use the + 1 column.

questions:
in #3 should this be a D12 instead of a D6? The chart has 1-12 and states 1-12, I can’t find anything on what to reference if it is a D6. Anything I am missing here?

in #4 how does one determine that the DD uses the +1 column versus the submarine? The “MINE & TORPEDO DAMAGE” chart does not have submarines on it and DD is the last ship type to the right on the chart. Am I missing something here?

thank you in advance.

Dave,

WRT your first question, yes in #3 you should use a D12 IAW the COLLISION DAMAGE table.  Obvious typo in the rules.  Going back, it looks like the table changed from a D6 to a D12 in Amendment 1.  Update to the rule text was obviously missed.

WRT your second question, the bullet is stating how to deal with a sub collision since subs are not on the MINE & TORPEDO DAMAGE table.  I suppose you'll need Lonnie, or someone similar, to confirm, but I believe the second sentence basically implies for a surface ship (vs. a sub), you assume the sub is in a column just right of the "DD - TB" column on the MINE & TORPEDO DAMAGE table, so essentially any surface ship at least TB sized is going to use the +1 column on the COLLISION DAMAGE table.  It is somewhat unfortunate the sentence is in italics, indicating an example.

V/R,

[Another] Dave

Yes, Dave Franklin is correct.  During the final stages of preparing GQ 3.3, we spent some time streamlining and smoothing the procedures such as using a D12 for most activities in place of a D6. Inadvertently, we did not update the Section 1.3.3 text.  I have updated the text with the changes indicated in red on a pdf for those who would like to update their files.

In addition during my review, I found that mine damage to submarines was not clearly indicated.  Thus, I have changed the  "Torpedo" column on the SUBMARINE DAMAGE table on Chart 9-J to now read "Mine or Torpedo."   A pdf of the revised chart, now 9-L, will also be made available.

These changes will also be posted in the Bonus Files on the Forum for those that may not have accessed this post.

Sorry for the confusion,

LONNIE

PS:  You will note that "torpedo tubes" is repeated at the bottom of page 1 - 4 revised as well as at the top of page 1 - 5.  Seems MicroSoft has revised their formating slightly, yet again.
