The rules say to use the speed in the light yellow shaded shaded hull box when having an engineering hit. My SDS's are in B&W,

is this referring to a future product?

Yes.  The current logs are available as a download in GQ3.3 (which, as a registered owner, you should have access to).

The ship logs included with the rules are all in colour, as are the downloadable 'deluxe' logs.

Are the 'Deluxe Logs' different from those in the book. I'm looking to play Java Sea but don't see some classes in GQ3

The Deluxe Logs are different from the color Logs in the book, and seem to contain every ship in operation at a specific time during the war (although my list has a few that the Deluxe Logs do not show - I am still trying to cross-reference known Movements to see where the possible discrepancies arise - but the "missing ships" are all auxiliaries, whose wartime records can be sparse, and it is likely that the Deluxe Logs were created before newer research on some of the ships showed Participation in each Theatre).

The only thing that I have found wrong with some of the Ship Logs is primarily with the Auxiliaries. Here, many of the APs and AKs have insufficient Holds or Troop spaces.

The most egregious I have found so far is the USS West Point (AP-23), where all sources that I can find show that she carried roughly 7,700 - 7,800 troops (~600 of whom were officers).

By the rules given in the Merchant Ship Supplement she should have 18 - 20 Troop Holds, and 2 Cargo Holds.

Yet the Ship Log contains only 4 such Troop Boxes (only enough for 1,600 Troops, or roughly 1/5th of the total troops the ship could carry).

Many other Auxiliaries contain similar discrepancies from the Merchant Ship Supplement's rules regarding either Cargo Space, or Hull Boxes given the displacement of the Hull (The USS West Point, for instance, should have roughly 10 Hull Boxes - it was an enormous ship, comparable to a larger Ocean Liner - roughly 30,000 displacement tons).

There are a few other minor errors, such as the USS New Orleans and USS Minneapolis having an AA Rating that is perhaps too low for the period after August of 1942. At that time, these ships, or at the very least the New Orleans, escorted the USS Enterprise back to PHNY, after the Enterprise was damaged at the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. And at Pearl Harbor, she had a pair of Quad 40mm Bofors installed on her fantail.

A rough estimation of the AA factors shows that it should have at least ½ to 1 AA Factor higher, especially at close range due to the pair of Quad Bofors adding to her AA suite.

But these are trivial errors that are easily fixed in any PDF editor, if that is an issue.

As for the Logs themselves, they are significantly different than the Color Logs with the rules.

The Searchlight, Director Control Towers, Bridge, and Ship's Boats are shown listed as graphical components on the Ship's Log as a part of the Hull.

The Radar Types are differentiated on many ships between Surface and Air, and the Radar Fire Control is sometimes differentiated between Main and Secondary Battery.

Also included are designation of the Communication's Suite on the ship (regular radio, or Radio Telephone)..

They are worth the investment (although I am a bit annoyed as had I seen one of them, I could have created my own in Photoshop in an afternoon - I do a lot of graphics work - although I suppose given what I charge per hour buying them would save money).

But you definitely get your money's worth.

Cheers Matthew - I simply hadn't realised that they were a separate purchase...
